Channel Power vs Frequency for Ubiquiti devices

We performed measurements of real power in the channel for Ubiquiti devices Rocket M2, Rocket M5, Rocket M365 and Bullets M2, M5 HP.

For the measurement of channel power versus frequency (Channel Power) we used real-time analyzer TEKTRONIX RSA3408B and to verify the result R&S®NRP2 Power Meter.

Following the publication of the Ubiquity's forum comment on the presented results and then close the thread by moderator, we would like to comment on information that appeared in it:

1. To accurately measure avg. TX power, you must place radio in continuous TX state. Unfortunately, we cannot include this tool with AirOS.
2. For 2x2 MIMO devices, the total power must be added together and to get total power.


Ad.1.

All the devices measured in this study, are based on digital packet transmission, so there can be no continuous transmission power, and only the signal strength of the accompanying individual data packets. Channel Power measurement was carried out with the help of specialized packet analyzer which takes into account the type of transmission.



Ad.2.

2x2 MIMO transmitter uses two independent data streams and the amount of output connectors shall not affect the distribution of power. In addition, we have made measuring the power transmitted from the two output connectors at the same time and Channel Power measurement is identical to the Channel Power measured at a single output connector.

Results of power measurements that are below will allow for informed choices by the operating frequency for your devices. Actual power differs greatly depending on the chosen frequency and have a direct impact on the quality of your wireless links.

Ubiquiti devices presented in this study worked under the control of the latest AirOS 5.3 software. The results of measurements of the measurements performed on AirOS 5.21 software were the same, indicating no impact on the software version of the measurement results obtained.
